From January 29 to February 1, members of the Portugal District’s Ministerial Credentials and Ministerial Studies Boards gathered in the beautiful city of Ponta Delgada, Azores, for a time of focused training, learning, and spiritual renewal. This retreat brought together newly appointed district leadership and board members eager to grow in understanding their vital role in shaping and supporting pastoral leadership across the district.

Led by Regional Director Mark Louw, the weekend created space for both practical instruction and meaningful connection. Through guided review of the Manual and the Eurasia Regional Sourcebook, along with real-life examples and case studies, participants engaged deeply with the responsibilities entrusted to them. Together, they explored how these boards function not only as evaluative bodies, but as formative partners in the development, care, and encouragement of current and future leaders within the Church.

Beyond the structured training sessions, the retreat also fostered relationships and a shared sense of calling. Conversations, reflection, and prayer strengthened unity among the group as they looked ahead to the work God is doing in Portugal and the role these leaders will play in stewarding that work faithfully and wisely.

Reflecting on the time together, District Superintendent Cris Yabuki shared, “More than just technical training, these days represented an intentional investment in the spiritual, theological, and relational health of our district leadership. I firmly believe that when we care for those who train and mentor our ministers, we are caring for the future of the Church. What was sown in Ponta Delgada will certainly bear fruit in local churches, pastors, and the new generations that God is raising up.” The reflection continued with gratitude for the support of West Med Field Coordinator Diego Lopez and for the wisdom and experience shared by Mark Louw, affirming a shared commitment to leadership that is faithful to Scripture, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and dedicated to making Christlike disciples in Portugal.

The weekend concluded on a joyful note as participants joined the local congregation in Ponta Delgada for Sunday morning worship. It was a meaningful reminder that all leadership, training, and preparation ultimately flow from and return to the shared life and mission of the Church.
